How can I best prepare my child for their first visit?
A calm first visit sets the tone for years of dental care.
Children pick up on adult anxiety quickly, so how you talk about the visit beforehand often matters just as much as what actually happens in the chair.
Why the first visit matters so much
A positive early experience shapes how a child feels about dental visits for years afterward, while a stressful first visit can create anxiety that follows them into adulthood.
What to do in the days before the appointment.
A little preparation at home goes a long way toward a smoother visit.
Choose your words carefully
Avoid words like "pain," "shot," or "drill," even if meant reassuringly ("it won't hurt"), since children often fixate on the word itself. Keep it simple: the dentist will count their teeth and help them stay healthy.
Time the visit well
Book an appointment when your child is usually well-rested and fed, rather than close to nap time or when they're already tired, hungry, or overstimulated.
Practice at home
Let your child "check" your teeth with a small mirror, play dentist with a stuffed animal, or read a book about visiting the dentist so the environment feels familiar rather than new.
Stay calm and let the team lead
Kids mirror parents' energy closely. A relaxed, matter-of-fact attitude from you helps far more than reassurance repeated too many times, which can sometimes suggest there's something to worry about.
What actually happens at a first visit.
Knowing what to expect ahead of time can ease your own nerves too, which your child will pick up on.
For very young children
It's often just a quick look, a gentle count of teeth, and a chance for them to get comfortable sitting in the chair — no pressure to do more than that on the first visit.
For slightly older children
A light cleaning and a simple explanation of each step, often with a "tell-show-do" approach, so nothing happens without them seeing and understanding it first.
